Increasing options and expectations
Contrasting thread and welt colors are one of the easiest ways to add a custom element to finished upholstery. The thread sits exposed at the panel surface, which means color and weight are both visible design decisions, not just construction details.
Foam thickness options for quilted marine vinyl
At Canvas Designers, we use foam from ¼" up to ¾" thickness on all our wholesale marine vinyl upholstery fabric, with tricot backing already applied to all four options. Our standard is ½", which gives a rich, pronounced look that reads well on most patterns. We step down to ⅜" or ¼" when a smaller pattern calls for a flatter, tighter profile.
Most automotive quilting is done on ¼" foam. Going thicker in the marine space isn't always better; the foam thickness should match the design's scale.
Marine thread and design creativity
The thread is part of the finished product, not just the construction. Quilt stitching exposes thread on the panel surface, so both size and color affect the final look. A large-diameter contrasting thread on dark vinyl creates bold definition. A fine thread in a matching tone gives a more tailored, subtle finish.
Automotive trends tend to flow into the marine industry. Fluorescent topstitching on sports car seats is a good example of what eventually shows up on center consoles. It's worth thinking about thread capability when evaluating future equipment investments.

Equipment: how we produce what most shops can't
Canvas Designers has invested in quilting equipment specifically to overcome the limitations most shops face.
Standard machines have throat restrictions that make large patterns difficult. We addressed this first with a 30" long-arm sewing machine, which remains in daily use for channel and diamond patterns.
For more intricate work, we moved to a Gammill Statler® stitcher , a CNC-driven machine typically used for bedding, and adapted it for the heavier thread weights marine quilting requires. It handled basic diamond patterns well, but had limits on complexity.
Anticipating marine market demand
The ZSK: largest marine quilting capacity in the country
When demand for more complex patterns grew, we upgraded to a ZSK CNC embroidery and quilting machine. It's one of the few machines on the market that combine heavy-duty quilt stitching thread with fine embroidery thread in a single pass.
The ZSK runs 12 threads simultaneously, 6 heavy quilt threads and 6 embroidery threads, which means we can stitch a pattern and add custom embroidery in the same production run, with no additional steps. Any pattern that can be drawn can be stitched.
Our machine handles a continuous panel area of 52" x 54", the largest available in the U.S. That size, combined with the embroidery capability, opens up design options that most competitors can't execute in-house.
This capacity also allows us to produce panels for other upholstery shops and fabricators who want finished quilted material, ready to cut and install.
The embroidery machines in this market segment have a fixed head and a large hoop that moves the fabric in the pattern we are trying to achieve. Our machine has the largest sewing area available in the U.S. We can continuously sew a panel area of 52 by 54 inches with our ZSK and embed embroidery anywhere within this area. This capability gives us an infinite number of design elements, enabling us to build unique, high-end upholstery products that many competitors cannot produce. It has also created an opportunity to produce these panels for other shops and has allowed us to expand our workload, keeping the machine busy with our retail and wholesale marine vinyl upholstery work.
Quilted panels work across boat interiors and exteriors from salon sofas and headliners to helm chairs and cockpit cushions.
Marine quilted upholstery fabric designs change just like the fashion industry, but quilt stitching is the newest trend and will be here for a while, so jump on board.Marine quilted upholstery fabric follows design trends the same way fashion does. The dimensional look of quilt stitching has staying power the craftsmanship is visible, the material performs in the marine environment, and the result adds real value to a finished upholstery project.
