Fitted to the cockpit

Mezzanine seating made around your boat

Mezzanine upholstery covers the raised seating overlooking a sportfish cockpit. Canvas Designers in Riviera Beach, Florida, creates fitted seat cushions, backrests, bolsters and coordinated caddies. Projects can include recovering existing cushions, replacing foam and covers, or planning a new set around the boat’s seating layout and access points.

The seating base, backrest profile and access points determine how a mezzanine cushion set should fit. Review the whole area, including hatches, attachments and the cushions you plan to keep, before finalizing the covers and comfort details.

Recover existing cushions

Keep a layout you like when the foam and cushion shapes remain suitable. Review the covers, fit and detailing before deciding what to retain.

Worth discussing for

A familiar layout with a new finish.

Replace foam and covers

Address worn covers and cushions that have lost support together. Confirm finished thickness, edge profiles and fit against the seating base.

Worth discussing for

Comfort and appearance in the same project.

Plan a new cushion set

Review new shapes when the seating layout changes or old cushions cannot provide a reliable pattern. Include backrests, access and attachments.

Worth discussing for

A broader cockpit refit or revised layout.

A coordinated finish

Quilting, piping and caddies that work together

A quilt pattern changes the surface character of a panel. Piping outlines cushion divisions, while smooth bolster borders give the eye a place to rest. Coordinate these details across the backrest, seat and caddy so the finished bench reads as a set.

Review quilt alignment, smooth cushion borders, cup-holder placement and a useful storage recess as parts of the same seating plan.

Mezzanine upholstery questions

Compare the scope, materials and details before choosing the finished look.

Call the upholstery team
What is mezzanine seating on a sportfish boat?

Mezzanine seating is the raised seating area overlooking the cockpit on many sportfishing yachts. Its upholstery can include seat cushions, backrests, bolsters and caddies. The arrangement and fit depend on the boat’s seating base and access points.

Can you recover existing mezzanine cushions?

Recovering is worth discussing when the existing shapes, foam and layout are still usable. If the foam has lost support or the fit needs to change, review replacement foam and covers or a new cushion set. Photos help define the initial scope.

Is Sunbrella mezzanine upholstery woven fabric or vinyl?

It can be either. Sunbrella makes woven upholstery fabrics and Horizon marine vinyl. Horizon Capriccio has a pebbled appearance, while Textil has an embossed linen-like texture. Confirm the exact collection instead of identifying the material from a photograph.

Which material is best for mezzanine upholstery?

The appropriate choice depends on sun and spray exposure, the seating construction, surface feel and care routine. Compare actual samples and the manufacturer’s application guidance. A shaded mezzanine and fully exposed seating may call for different material choices.

Can the cushions coordinate with my helm chairs and caddies?

A coordinated plan can include the mezzanine, helm seating and caddies. Share photos and any existing material information or samples. Compare the pieces you are keeping because age and use can change how an older color looks beside new upholstery.

Can you add diamond quilting, contrast piping or embroidery?

Canvas Designers offers custom quilting and embroidery, with piping and panel details reviewed during design. The selected material, panel size, pattern placement and artwork affect the result. Agree on these details before the covers are patterned or assembled.

What determines mezzanine upholstery cost and timing?

The number and size of pieces, material selection, foam condition, detailing and access requirements help define the quote. Timing also depends on material availability and the work schedule. Include any launch or travel date when you contact the team.

How should I care for new mezzanine cushions?

Follow the selected material’s cleaning instructions and ask about drying and storage for the finished cushions. Confirm that a cleaner is compatible before using it. General marine upholstery guidance is useful, but the actual material and cushion construction should guide care.

We personally use ½-inch as our standard thickness and go down to 3/8-inch or ¼-inch only when we have a very small pattern and are looking to have a flattering look.

All cushions are sewn with high quality thread available in many colors.
